On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of city relations between Berlin and Beijing our CITYMAKERS-team developed a new framework for Sino-German twin cities to further learn and innovate for liveable city making.
In addition to the STADTMACHER-Blatt (#1/#2/#3), which was a semi-annual information leaflet published until 2018 bundling the results of our ongoing mappings of the urban cooperation landscapes between Germany and China, we further published two STADTMACHER Recommendations (2016/ 2018), the bimonthly online magazine InterVIEWS, the Beijing-Berlin Learning Cities Map (a project within the framework of the ‘Promotion of Urban Partnership Projects’ of the Berlin Senate Chancellery) and Reading the Traces of a Place – a space discovery activity booklet.
Reading the Traces of a Place
What are the topics and objects that catch your interest in the PLACE? Why? How are you interacting with the place? How are people using the place? CITYMAKERS China – Germany´s WU Yimeng and Katja Hellkötter co-created a booklet – Reading the Traces of a Place 读书地方的痕迹 – as a tool for an alternative spatial cognition.
Conceptual Thoughts for the 3rd year of program. Why again? What so far? What now?
Three insights led to the program’s design in 2016. First, technological innovation needs to be complemented by social innovation and a more holistic view to sustainable development. Second, a large group of people who studied architecture, urbanism, and city planning between China and Germany are a potential leverage point for stronger Sino-German people-to-people relations.

STADTMACHER – Blatt #3
